Battle of Helmstedt – Move 8

1500-1600 29 July 1813

Table at the start of move 8

3rd Prussian corps, north of the road, is ready to attack

4th Prussian corps, south of the road, is in two parts as cavalry move to the front

XIII French corps has withdrawn their left flank towards Helmstedt

Artillery fire on enemy guns (7) and miss

Manhandle guns forward

Three infantry brigades move forward in column of attack


XIII French corps

General Poniatowski (Poor) – 5CP – Retreat to Helmstedt

Artillery fire on farm (9) and miss

Square moves back towards Helmstedt

Poniatowski moves to centre of corps

2 infantry brigade forms square


Marshal Davout (Gifted) – 7CP

Take command of lancer brigade

Lancer brigade withdraw towards Helmstedt facing enemy


Blucher tales command of 4th corps artillery

General Blucher (Average) – 5CP

Blucher joins 4th corps artillery and takes command

4th corps artillery double move to front of corps


4th Prussian corps

General Tauentzien (Poor) – 4 CP – Move to Helmstedt

Tauntzien moves to rear half of corps column

Rear half of column moves towards Helmstedt on left of main road

Notes on Game

CinC can take command of one brigade each move. If they do so, they can only issue orders to that brigade. Both CinC have done so this move.

The Prussian deployment is taking a long time, and with only four hours/moves left to night they are in danger of running out of time.
